Bride and groom holding hands crossing the street during their solstice wedding at Vaux Studio by Jason Moody

Winter Solstice Wedding at Vaux Studio

I loved second shooting this timeless wedding for J. Flynn Photography at the intimate Vaux Studios! This venue is such a unique little gem in Philadelphia. It’s run by Monica, who has carefully curated every aspect of the studio space and bridal suite to create a beautiful not-quite-blank-slate for couples to build on. The eclectic charm of the atmosphere balances creativity with simplicity, making Vaux Studios the perfect venue for tasteful microweddings.

This couple accented the decor with simple evergreen boughs and beeswax candles as a nod to the winter solstice – a time of year that has significant meaning to both of them. Their cake had clean, sharp lines softened by smatterings of gold leaf, and it was a good representation of the elegance at this micro wedding – tasteful minimalism with a hint of magic.

Intimate Winter Solstice Wedding at Vaux Studio

One of my favorite moments from the day, and one that yielded some of the most striking images, was when the newlyweds had their first dance in the staircase foyer of Vaux Studios. It’s such an intimate space, and the black and white tiles are so dramatic: I had to climb the stairs and capture it from above.

And, of course, as a wedding photographer who loves to work on film as well as digitally, I loved getting to capture some more vibrant moments as we frolicked in the backstreets of Philly together for their couples portraits!
